Why Documentaries Are Great For Backpackers
I am such a big fan of a good documentary which is engaging and can teach me more about different topics and issues going on in our world. Whats more I find that when you are traveling or on the road a really good documentary can open your mind up about the bigger picture issues that are happening in our world or which have occurred in the past and have helped shape our current existence.
If you have been on the road backpacking or traveling abroad then there is no doubt you will have found yourself at some point in time sitting around twiddling your thumbs wishing you still had some pages left to read in your book that you recently finished or having something interesting to watch to simply kill the time.
I remember when I was in South East Asia I spent the night in the cross border town of Huay Xai in Laos, just across the river from the Thailand main land and I was keen on traveling down to the beautiful Luang Prabang. Huay Xai is an extremely undeveloped little town, I mean they have electricity but they tend to use it sparingly, I enjoyed my one night stay there but there was more excitement to be had on my travels so I was keen to get on the road. I was given some ill informed information from some locals telling me that if I went to the main bus stop in town I would get the only bus out of town at 10am. I got to the bus stop and ended up waiting around until 3pm before the 1 bus of the day left Huay Xai to Luang Prabang. I then spent the next 18 hours on this bus with nothing but music to listen to, a completed copy of the true crime book called the Damage Done by Warren Fellows, some dodgy bootleg dvd’s which I had already seen too many times and my South East Asian Lonely Planet guide which one can only read so many times. I had my laptop with me and would have killed for something to fill in the time whilst traveling through the pitch black of the night country side of Laos. It was the only entertainment I had and it sucked.
Needless to say that if I had access to some of the best online documentaries my time would have been far more interesting. Watching these documentaries online without WiFi may have been a problem but one can certainly use the appropriate software to make copies of any of these documentaries onto a hard drive for easy access on the road.
However, most places these days have great access to WiFi especially on the backpacking trails throughout the world.
What’s in a Good Documentary
I guess everyone is different and has their own interests and its for this reason that we have provided a huge list of some of the most interesting and educational documentaries available on the Internet.
For me a good documentary will be one that is educational, something which can give a better insight into a topic of history or events that have happened in the past or creations and inventions that have shaped our world. But my favourite documentaries are the ones that give me topics and issues to really make me think about things in my own life and things that can help me improve myself.
